School supplies for New York City homeless children

ImageNearly 11,000 school-age children live with their families in New York City homeless shelters. Most of these children will go back to school in September without the basic school supplies they need unless we help. Circle of Hope volunteers purchased, filled and sorted backpacks for grades K-12, in support of VOA Operation Backpack. The highlight was Sort Week on August 10-14 where hundreds of volunteers worked to sort the grade appropriate backpacks.

ImageCircle of Hope volunteers spent the month of July traveling throughout Serbia with the mission of organizing one of the largest projects to date aimed at assisting approximately 2,000 institutionalized children. Since Circle of Hope began providing assistance in Serbia in 2002, one of the main focal points has been to serve some of the most vulnerable and often forgotten children – those living without parental care in institutions and collective centers, refugee children, disabled and others.

ImageOperation Backpack is Volunteer's of America annual back-to-school drive and New York City's most important campaign that benefits homeless children. Last year’s campaign resulted in 7,000 children receiving new, filled backpacks. Record numbers of children and their families are entering the shelter system and their needs are grater than ever. A well-stocked backpack helps these children look and feel more like their housed classmates on that important first day of school.

One of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the impact it has on the children’s education. Homeless children face tremendous stigmatization; as a result, they are more likely than their housed counterparts to be placed in special education classes and to drop out of school.

Thanks to our donators and "The Circle of Hope", these children's lives are greatly improved. They still live in refugee camps or in slums, but the help from "the Circle of Hope" makes their lives somewhat easier to endure.

Help For Victims of Blaze In YonkersFor the second time in three days, a raging fire drove hundreds of Yonkers residents out of their homes yesterday. As Circle of H O P E is based in Scarsdale, New York, only a few miles from the blaze in Yonkers, members of the Foundation were among the first ones to help.
